From the rugged beauty of Northern Italy, comes a herding breed with unparalleled vigour and intelligence. The Bergamasco, the Italian Alpine Sheepdog, is a valiant protector with intuitive problem solving and enough initiative, confidence and work ethic to do the job without supervision.
However, this unique companion — also referred to as the Alpine Sheepdog and the Northern Italian Sheepdog — is not a solitary dog, but rather enjoys and forms strong bonds with the shepherd as well as the rest of its human family. As befits this “shepherd of the Alps”, the breed has very humble beginnings, traceable back to the farm of Piero Rota in the Bergamo hills of Italy in the late 1940s or early 1950s of the last century. On this introductory page, you see “Feo di Valle Imagna” and “Alpino di Valle Imagna”, the very first progeny of his Valle Imagna kennel. At this time, other kennels sprouted up, including del Idro, Valle Scrivia, Albera, Braham; many of whom were based on the Valle Imagna bloodlines.
So, welcome to the Bergamasco Sheepdog Association of Canada. Please stay as long as you like and come back as often as you want. There are important segments of information being worked on so you can browse the information offered—Code of Ethics for example—and then take that information away and think about it for a while; that will be ongoing… until all the pieces of the big picture are in place.
In the meantime, we serve the thirsty travellers…
